The NIE, short for Número de Identidad de Extranjero, is the personal number used to identify a foreign national in dealings with the Spanish authorities.
You may need it for a property transaction, tax paperwork or another economic, professional or social connection with Spain. However, receiving a NIE does not itself give you permission to live or work in the country.
Understanding what the number does will help you choose the correct procedure and avoid confusing NIE assignment with a residence application.
What is a NIE number?
The NIE is an administrative identifier assigned to a foreign national. Article 205 of the current Immigration Regulation describes it as personal, unique and exclusive.
It can be assigned during an immigration procedure or requested separately because of a relevant connection with Spain. You do not necessarily need to obtain it through a standalone application before starting a residence procedure.
The number and the document displaying it are different things. Your NIE may appear on an assignment certificate, an immigration decision, a TIE card or an EU registration certificate.
Before requesting a number, check whether one has already been assigned.
NIE, TIE, CUE and NIF: what is the difference?
These terms refer to different identifiers, documents and administrative functions.
| Term | What it means | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| NIE | Número de Identidad de Extranjero | Identifies a foreign national in Spanish administrative records |
| TIE | Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero | Physical card documenting the holder’s immigration status |
| CUE | Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión | Records registration under the EU citizen residence regime and includes the NIE |
| NIF | Número de Identificación Fiscal | Identifies a person or entity for tax purposes; for an individual foreign national, it generally corresponds to the NIE |
The NIE is the number. A TIE or CUE is a document that can contain that number.
The Interior Ministry’s TIE guidance explains the card’s role in documenting immigration status. Keep your valid passport or other accepted identity document as well.
For EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, the relevant residence-registration procedure is the EU citizen registration certificate. A standalone NIE certificate does not replace that registration.
What is a NIE used for?
A NIE allows Spanish authorities to connect a transaction, application or record with the correct person.
Common situations in which you may be asked for it include:
- Property purchases, sales or related notarial paperwork.
- Inheritance and other transactions with Spanish administrative or tax implications.
- Business or professional registrations.
- Tax filings and communications with the Spanish Tax Agency.
- Employment and Social Security administration.
Check the requirements of the particular transaction. Having a NIE does not automatically complete the other registrations, checks or permissions involved.
For example, providing your NIE to an employer does not, by itself, establish that you are authorised to work.
Is the NIE also my Spanish tax number?
For an individual foreign national, the NIF generally corresponds to the NIE. The Spanish Tax Agency’s guidance also explains that a person without a DNI or NIE may need a NIF assigned by the tax administration in the circumstances it describes.
Consequently, NIE assignment and tax registration are related administrative matters, but they are not interchangeable procedures.
If you already have a tax identifier and later receive a NIE, check how the relevant tax records should be updated.
Does a NIE allow you to live or work in Spain?
No. NIE assignment is an identification procedure.
Your right to stay, reside or work depends on your nationality, immigration status and the rules governing your intended activity.
A non-resident property buyer may need a NIE for the transaction without applying for Spanish residence. Someone relocating to work in Spain needs to assess the appropriate immigration route as well.
For EU citizens moving to Spain for more than three months, registration under the EU residence regime is a separate obligation where applicable. The official procedure uses form EX-18 and requires evidence of the relevant registration conditions.
A NIE certificate is also not a visa or travel document. Keep entry, stay and residence requirements separate from the need for an administrative number.
Who needs a separate NIE application?
A standalone request may be appropriate if you need the number for a relevant connection with Spain and have not already been assigned one.
The National Police’s NIE procedure requires applicants to explain why they need the number. For this procedure, they must not be in Spain in an irregular immigration situation.
Consider these examples:
- Buying a property while living abroad: check whether NIE assignment is needed for the transaction and which submission route applies.
- Moving to Spain as an EU citizen: assess the registration procedure, which includes a NIE, rather than assuming a separate EX-15 application is the only step.
- Renewing an existing residence permit: check your existing number and follow the renewal procedure for the authorisation.
The appropriate application depends on the result you need.
Where can you find an existing NIE?
Review previous Spanish documentation before applying. The number may already appear on:
- A TIE or EU registration certificate.
- A residence approval decision.
- Earlier immigration correspondence.
- A previous NIE assignment certificate.
If you have used a representative, ask for the relevant decision or confirmation of your existing record.
Changing your passport, renewing a card or losing the assignment certificate is not a reason to request a second NIE. If you cannot locate the number, establish the existing record with the competent authority.

Documents for a standalone NIE application
The Interior Ministry’s documentation guidance lists the core requirements.
| Document | What to check |
|---|---|
| Form EX-15 | Use the current official form, complete the correct request and sign it; the Ministry’s checklist calls for two copies |
| Identification | Prepare the original and copy of the complete valid passport or another accepted identity or travel document |
| Reason for applying | Explain the economic, professional, social or other relevant connection with Spain |
| Fee documentation | Use the correct payment form and retain proof of payment |
| Representation documents, if applicable | Establish the representative’s identity and sufficient authority expressly covering the application |
You can find EX-15 in the Ministry’s official immigration forms catalogue.
The explanation should describe the actual purpose of the request. Prepare supporting evidence where required, and check any additional instructions from the receiving office or consulate.
Can you apply in Spain or from abroad?
In Spain, applications can be presented through the relevant Immigration Office or National Police office. The Interior Ministry also provides for presentation through a properly authorised representative.
From outside Spain, the application is submitted through the Spanish consular office corresponding to the applicant’s place of residence. Check that office’s current instructions for appointments, identification copies, representation, payment and delivery of the result.
A consular NIE service and a visa service are different procedures. Confirm which appointment you need before booking.

How much does NIE assignment cost?
As of 15 October 2026, the state fee in Spain for NIE assignment requested by the applicant is €9.84, under item 5.12 of the official fee schedule in Order PJC/617/2025.
Use the Police’s Modelo 790, código 012 form and select the option corresponding to NIE assignment at the applicant’s request.
Other options concern certificates, cards or different procedures. Check the selected item before paying.
For a consular application, follow the office’s payment instructions. Professional assistance and any document formalities are separate from the government fee.
Does the NIE expire?
The identification number itself is not renewed periodically like a temporary residence authorisation or TIE.
A document displaying the number may have its own validity or evidential requirements. An organisation may also ask for a recently issued certificate. Clarify which document it needs rather than applying for another number.
For example, if your TIE expires, you must assess the renewal requirements for your status and card. Your existing NIE remains the identifier used in that process.
Keep the distinction between the number, the document and the underlying immigration permission.
Frequently asked questions
Can I obtain a NIE without being a Spanish resident?
Yes, a relevant connection with Spain can justify a standalone request without the number conferring residence. Follow the applicable requirements and submission route.
How long does NIE assignment take?
The Police procedure lists a maximum five-day resolution and notification period from entry in the competent authority’s register. Appointment availability, document preparation and consular transmission affect the overall timetable. Do not treat that period as a guarantee of the entire process.
Is my NIE the same as my Social Security number?
No. The Social Security number is a separate identifier. Check whether you already have one and use the official Social Security number service for the appropriate procedure.
Do I need a new NIE after renewing my passport?
You should continue using your existing NIE. Check which authorities and organisations need updated passport details; a new passport does not require a second NIE assignment.
