Choosing where to live in Spain as a digital nomad involves more than finding a beautiful beach or an attractive apartment. Your working hours, housing budget, travel needs and immigration position all affect whether a city will suit you.

Málaga, Madrid, Valencia and Alicante offer four different starting points. You might prioritise coastal living, a busy urban environment, cycling between everyday errands, or keeping your housing costs within a manageable range.

This guide compares those options and explains what to check before committing to a move. Our recommendations focus on how each city could fit your routine, with a dated rental comparison to help you begin your research.

Rental costs: compare the four cities before you commit

Housing deserves an early place in your planning. A city can suit your lifestyle while the apartments available for your dates fall outside your budget.

Idealista’s September 2026 city reports show the following rental price indicators:

CityAdvertised rental price indicator, September 2026
Málaga€16.5 per m² per month
Madrid€23.4 per m² per month
Valencia€16.3 per m² per month
Alicante€13.9 per m² per month

These indicators describe advertised housing prices. They do not represent the rent every tenant pays, and idealista’s methodology excludes temporary rentals to better reflect the conventional residential market. Use them to compare the cities, then check actual properties suitable for your stay.

On this measure, Madrid has the highest rental prices of the four and Alicante the lowest. Málaga and Valencia are close enough that the neighbourhood, apartment and contract could matter more than the difference between their city indicators.

Build your budget around the complete arrangement: rent, utilities, internet, workspace, transport and any upfront payments. A furnished apartment for a short stay needs its own price comparison.

1. Málaga: coastal living with an airport rail connection

Málaga is worth considering if you want to combine a city routine with time by the sea. Its cultural attractions include the Picasso Museum and Pompidou Centre, while Soho, the port and seaside neighbourhoods offer different settings for exploring after work.

For your accommodation search, compare central options with areas such as Pedregalejo. Think about what you want within walking distance: your workspace, shops, restaurants or the waterfront. A location that looks ideal for a holiday may require compromises when you are working there every weekday.

Airport access is another useful feature. The C1 suburban train connects Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport with Málaga María Zambrano station and the city centre. If you travel regularly, check the complete journey from the apartment rather than relying only on the train connection.

For remote work, inspect the indoor setup carefully. Ask about the desk, cooling, internet connection and noise during your actual working hours. If your schedule includes confidential calls, test whether the apartment or a nearby workspace gives you enough privacy.

Our suggested fit: shortlist Málaga if coastal city life and airport access are important to you. Compare housing options carefully before deciding what is affordable for your situation.

2. Madrid: city culture and an extensive metro network

Madrid may suit you if you want your life outside work to include museums, cultural venues and a wide choice of urban neighbourhoods. Its official neighbourhood guide highlights areas with distinct identities, including Chamberí, Retiro, Malasaña and Madrid Río.

Start your housing search with your likely weekly journeys. If you expect to attend meetings, visit a particular coworking space or travel across the city frequently, a convenient station can be more useful than a famous postcode.

Madrid’s metro connects much of the city and surrounding areas. Line 8 provides a connection between Nuevos Ministerios and Madrid-Barajas Airport, although your full journey may require transfers. Check current service information when planning a trip.

Housing is the main budget consideration in this comparison. Before paying more for a central address, ask what practical benefit it gives you. Would another district provide a suitable apartment, a comfortable workspace and an acceptable journey to the places you use?

Visit potential homes at different times of day. Also inspect heating, cooling and natural light: the quality of the apartment will affect your working routine throughout the year.

Our suggested fit: shortlist Madrid if urban activities and regular journeys around the city are priorities, and your housing budget supports the options you find.

3. Valencia: cycling, green space and access to the coast

Valencia is a useful option to explore if you want everyday movement to include walking or cycling. The city’s cycling network and the Turia Garden provide opportunities to build outdoor activity into your routine, alongside public transport for longer journeys.

Neighbourhood choice can change your experience considerably. Ruzafa offers restaurants, cafés and cultural activity, while the Cabanyal area provides a different setting closer to the maritime side of the city. Treat these as starting points for visits and housing research.

Map your real journeys before choosing an apartment. A coastal location may suit you well, but check the route to your workspace, shops and other regular appointments. Equally, a central apartment may make everyday errands easier while placing the beach further from your weekday routine.

Valencia’s airport has metro connections with the city. If you travel frequently, check how your prospective address connects with the relevant route and your departure times.

The rental comparison gives another reason to assess actual properties carefully: Valencia’s city indicator is close to Málaga’s. Let apartment quality, location and contract terms guide the final decision.

Our suggested fit: shortlist Valencia if cycling, green space and access to the coast are important parts of the life you want to build.

4. Alicante: a coastal option with a lower rental indicator

Alicante deserves a place on your shortlist if you want a coastal base and are comparing housing costs carefully. Its rental indicator was the lowest of these four cities in September 2026, although that does not guarantee a suitable apartment at a particular price.

The city’s official tourism board promotes Alicante as a teleworking destination and provides information about transport, accommodation and local activities for remote workers.

For housing, compare the centre with options around Playa de San Juan. Decide whether being near your everyday errands or closer to the beach matters more, then test the journey between your home and workspace.

Alicante has urban buses and TRAM services, including routes serving Playa de San Juan. The C6 bus links Alicante-Elche Airport with the city. Check current routes and departure times for the trips you expect to make.

Before settling on the city, find a workspace that matches your needs. Check opening hours, meeting facilities, call privacy and whether you can try the space before taking out a membership. This is especially useful if your working hours differ from the local business day.

Our suggested fit: shortlist Alicante if coastal living is a priority and its available housing options work for your budget and routine.

What to check before choosing your Spanish base

A productive working week is a useful test of whether a city suits you. If possible, spend time in your shortlisted location while following your usual schedule.

Before committing to accommodation, check:

  • Internet: ask about the connection at the specific property and test video calls where possible.
  • Workspace: confirm the desk, chair, lighting and privacy you will have.
  • Noise: visit during working hours and in the evening.
  • Comfort: inspect heating, cooling and ventilation.
  • Transport: test the journeys you will make regularly.
  • Total cost: confirm what the rent includes and which bills you pay separately.
  • Written terms: review the dates, deposit, payment arrangements and conditions of the proposed contract.

If you are moving with a partner or children, include their routines in the comparison. School journeys, healthcare access, suitable space at home and your partner’s activities may change which neighbourhood works best.

Your working time zone matters too. Evening calls can affect your choice of apartment and coworking space, even when the city itself feels like a good match.

Choosing a city and checking visa eligibility are separate decisions

Spain’s international telework residence authorisation is valid throughout the country. Choosing Málaga, Madrid, Valencia or Alicante does not replace the need to meet the applicable immigration requirements.

Under Law 14/2013, the route covers qualifying third-country nationals working remotely for businesses outside Spain. Employees under this authorisation can work only for businesses established abroad. For qualifying self-employed professionals, work for businesses in Spain may represent up to 20% of their total professional activity.

The consular visa can be valid for up to one year. Applicants who are legally in Spain and meet the requirements may apply for a residence authorisation lasting up to three years; shorter periods can apply depending on the working arrangement.

Check employer permission, supporting documents and the applicable Social Security arrangements before organising the move. The financial resources required for immigration purposes also need to be assessed separately from your personal living budget.
