Spanish student visa requirements depend on the course you intend to take, your age and whether you apply through a Spanish consulate or from within Spain. Before gathering documents, confirm that your programme qualifies and that you can use your intended application route.

This guide explains the main requirements and documents for an initial application in 2026. If you already hold a study authorisation, see our guide to extending your student authorisation in Spain.

Who Needs a Spanish Student Visa?

The long-term study route generally concerns nationals outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland who plan to undertake qualifying studies or training in Spain for more than 90 days.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens follow different registration rules. For shorter courses, check the applicable short-stay entry requirements.

A student visa obtained through a consulate and a study stay authorisation obtained from within Spain involve different procedures. Your current immigration status matters when deciding where to apply.

Check That Your Course Qualifies

An acceptance letter is essential, but admission alone does not establish eligibility. The institution, programme, qualification and teaching format must meet the conditions for the relevant category.

Programme categoryWhat to check
Higher educationA recognised institution and qualifying programme, such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree, with the required full-time enrolment.
Post-compulsory secondary educationAn authorised centre and a recognised qualification, such as qualifying vocational education.
Language studies and other trainingThe specific recognition, accreditation and attendance requirements for that activity.

For the language-study category, Spanish or co-official language courses must be taught in person at an Official Language School or an appropriately accredited centre. The language must not be your mother tongue or an official language of your country of nationality.

Ask the institution for the programme name, qualification, teaching format, timetable, start and end dates, and evidence of its relevant recognition or accreditation. Age requirements also vary by category.

Where Can You Apply, and When?

Applying from abroad: submit your visa application through the Spanish consulate responsible for your place of residence. Check its current appointment arrangements and local checklist.

The general rule is to apply at least two months before the programme begins. A shorter period requires a documented justification, such as an admission or enrolment timetable that prevents earlier filing.

Applying from Spain: adults who are lawfully in Spain can apply for qualifying higher-education studies. Other categories have different conditions, including cases requiring an existing residence authorisation.

A lawful tourist stay does not automatically allow an application for every course.

For an application from Spain, normally plan around both deadlines: at least two months before your current legal status expires and at least two months before the programme starts. A justified exception concerning the course-start deadline does not automatically remove the deadline linked to your legal stay.

Spanish Student Visa Document Checklist

The precise checklist depends on your route and circumstances. Prepare the following evidence:

DocumentWhat it should establish
Application formThe national visa form for a consular application, or the applicable EX-00 form for an application from Spain.
PassportA valid passport with at least one year of remaining validity, together with the copies required by the authority.
Admission and enrolment evidenceThe qualifying programme, its duration and your admission or enrolment.
Registration or tuition-payment evidencePayment of the required registration or enrolment charges, or an accepted arrangement or exemption.
Financial evidenceThe source, availability and sufficiency of your maintenance funds.
Health-insurance documentsQualifying coverage and the relevant policy dates.
Medical certificateFor the consular route, the required public-health certificate. Ministry guidance does not require this certificate for applications made from Spain.
Criminal-record certificatesWhere the stay exceeds six months and the applicant is over the age of criminal responsibility, the relevant certificates covering countries of residence during the previous five years.
Additional documentsApplicable fees, proof of residence in the consular district, photographs and any parental or guardianship documentation required.

Follow the authority’s instructions on originals, copies, document validity and translations. Check that your name and passport number are consistent throughout the file.

How Much Money Do You Need in 2026?

The maintenance benchmark is linked to IPREM. Using the 2026 monthly figure of €600, the basic amounts are:

ApplicantMonthly benchmark
Student€600 — 100% of IPREM
First eligible accompanying family memberAn additional €450 — 75% of IPREM
Each further eligible family memberAn additional €300 — 50% of IPREM

For a student alone, twelve months of maintenance at this rate amounts to €7,200. Tuition, return travel and any additional authorised period must be considered separately.

Evidence may include personal funds, scholarships or documented family support. Accommodation secured in advance can affect the assessment, but it does not create an automatic fixed discount.

For higher-education authorisations covering several years, Ministry criteria provide for the initial assessment of funds and insurance to cover the first year, with the requirements maintained subsequently.

What Health Insurance Is Required?

The insurer must be authorised to operate in Spain. The policy must provide comprehensive coverage comparable to the basic services of Spain’s public health system, without copayments, reimbursement arrangements or waiting periods.

Check coverage for the full authorised period, including any additional days before or after the course that are included in your authorisation.

Emergency treatment and repatriation cover alone do not establish that a travel policy meets these requirements. Obtain written confirmation of the relevant policy terms before purchasing it.

Apostilles, Legalisation and Sworn Translations

Foreign public documents may require an apostille or legalisation unless an applicable exemption exists.

Documents in another language may also require a sworn translation into Spanish or an accepted co-official language. Confirm the requirements for each document and the authority handling your application.

Obtain the required authentication before arranging the translation, so the translated file includes the relevant stamps and certificates.

What Happens After Approval?

Read the decision and check the authorised dates and conditions.

If the authorised stay exceeds six months, you must apply for a Foreigner Identity Card, or TIE. For a consular visa, the deadline is one month after entering Spain; for an authorisation granted from within Spain, it is one month after the grant.

Keep your approval decision, submission receipt, insurance documents and enrolment evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can My Parents Support Me Financially?

Yes. Documented family support can be used as evidence of financial means. Explain who provides the funds and show their availability, together with any relationship and sponsorship documents required by the authority.

Can I Work While Studying?

Higher-education authorisations permit employed and self-employed work automatically, provided it is compatible with the studies and respects the applicable conditions, generally including a 30-hour weekly limit.

Other categories may require separate work permission. Check the conditions of your particular authorisation before starting work.

Can My Family Accompany Me?

The accompanying-family route applies to higher-education students and specialised healthcare trainees, subject to its requirements.

Eligible relatives need their own applications, relationship evidence, financial support and health coverage. The accompanying-family authorisation does not itself permit employment.
