If your TIE is expiring and you need to travel outside Spain while your renewal is pending, check your re-entry documents before booking. A return authorization, known in Spanish as an autorización de regreso, can help eligible applicants leave Spain and return during a temporary gap in their documentation.
Eligibility, the document’s expiry date and your flight route all matter. A renewal receipt or fingerprint appointment receipt is not the same as an issued return authorization.
Who can apply for a return authorization in Spain?
The main situations are:
| Your situation | Main condition |
|---|---|
| Residence renewal or study-stay extension | You have submitted the renewal or extension within the applicable legal deadline. |
| Lost, stolen, destroyed or unusable TIE | The card was still valid and you have applied for a duplicate. |
| First authorization approved, with the TIE being issued | You must demonstrate that the journey is necessary and that exceptional circumstances exist. |
An initial application that is still awaiting approval does not qualify merely because it has been submitted.
If you are extending your studies, our student visa extension guide explains the underlying application.
Do you need one if your TIE is still valid?
If your passport and residence or study documentation remain valid for your return, a return authorization will generally not be needed.
Check the date you expect to re-enter, rather than only your departure date. A card that is valid when you leave may expire while you are abroad.
How long is a return authorization valid?
The maximum is 90 days, but the starting point depends on the circumstances:
| Situation | Maximum validity is counted from |
|---|---|
| Return authorization requested before the underlying permit expires (renewal or extension) | The expiry of that residence or stay authorization |
| Return authorization requested after the underlying permit expires (renewal or extension) | The date the return authorization is granted |
| Exceptional case following approval of an initial authorization | The date the return authorization is granted |
Read the actual validity dates on your document. Do not assume that every applicant receives 90 days starting on departure, or that a later trip restarts the period.
The same document permits multiple departures and entries during its validity.
Can you return through another Schengen country?
A Spanish return authorization is valid for entry through Spanish authorised border crossing points. It does not establish a right to enter another Schengen country.
For example, on a journey from New York to Madrid through Paris, the external Schengen border check would normally take place in France. The Spanish return authorization should not be relied on to satisfy French entry requirements.
The practical approach is to choose an itinerary where your entry into the Schengen Area takes place in Spain, and check any separate transit requirements. Confirm the route and documents with the airline before travelling.
What documents do you need?
Start with:
- The completed and signed official EX-13 application form, with an original and a copy.
- Your valid passport or recognised travel document, with a complete copy.
- Proof of payment of Modelo 790, code 012.
- Your existing TIE and authorization details, where available.
Add the evidence for your particular situation:
- Renewal or extension: proof that you filed the underlying application.
- Lost or stolen card: evidence that you reported the loss or theft and applied for a duplicate.
- Approved initial authorization: the favourable decision and documents demonstrating the need for the journey and exceptional circumstances.
Bring originals for checking against copies. A passport photograph is not included in the Ministry of the Interior’s standard checklist for this procedure; check the instructions of the office handling your appointment.
How much is the fee?
The published administrative fee is €10.72, under Modelo 790, code 012, selecting the item for “Autorización de regreso.”
This is separate from any residence-renewal fee, TIE fee or professional fee. Check the amount on the current official form when you pay, and retain the payment receipt.
How do you apply?
The National Police currently lists this as an in-person procedure. Check the instructions for the Immigration Office or police station handling it in your province of residence.
Prepare the file in this order:
- Confirm which eligibility category applies to you.
- Complete EX-13, including the reason for the request and your planned time outside Spain.
- Check the local appointment arrangements through the official immigration appointment portal.
- Pay the correct fee and organise the supporting documents.
- Attend the appointment and follow the office’s instructions for receiving the document.
Booking an appointment online does not mean that the authorization itself has been granted. Confirm that you will have the issued document before travelling.
Collection is normally personal. The Ministry describes exceptions for minors, people with disabilities and applicants whose inability to attend is properly evidenced; the required representation must be checked for the relevant case.
How early should you arrange it?
Start before committing to travel dates. Appointment availability and the time needed to issue the document can vary, so a universal promise of delivery within one to three days would be misleading.
Applications involving a demonstrated situation of necessity receive preferential processing. Explain the circumstances and provide supporting evidence when requesting this treatment.
Check both the departure date and the planned return against the issued document. Allow room for foreseeable changes to your journey.
Frequently asked questions
Does a renewal receipt replace a return authorization?
No. It proves that you submitted the underlying application, but it is not the return authorization. Keep the two procedures and their documents distinct.
What if my renewal is refused while I am abroad?
Have the decision, notification date and any appeal options reviewed immediately before relying on existing travel documents. The appropriate next step depends on the actual case; it should not be reduced to a blanket instruction to apply for a new visa.
What if the return authorization expires before I come back?
An expired authorization cannot be relied on for re-entry. Contact the relevant Spanish consulate and obtain advice about your immigration position and available travel documents before attempting to return.
What should I do if I lose it abroad?
Report the loss where appropriate and contact the Spanish consulate and the issuing authority. Keep copies of your passport, authorization and application documents, but do not assume that a scan will replace the original for travel.
After your return to Spain
Continue monitoring your renewal or extension and complete the TIE process when applicable. A return authorization addresses travel documentation; it does not replace the underlying immigration procedure.
