Renewing your Spanish residence starts with identifying the authorisation you hold. An employee, a self-employed professional and a non-lucrative resident need different evidence, even when all three have a TIE card approaching its expiry date.
Your checklist should answer three questions: which procedure applies, when you can submit it, and which documents prove that you meet its requirements. This guide explains the main differences and how to prepare your renewal in 2026.
Are you renewing your residence authorisation or your TIE?
A residence authorisation is the permission to live in Spain. The Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) is the physical card documenting your status.
For many temporary residents, the process has two stages: renew the authorisation with the competent immigration authority, then obtain the new TIE through the Police. Booking a fingerprint appointment does not submit your residence renewal.
If you already hold long-term residence, the position is different. The authorisation permits indefinite residence and work, while the physical card still needs periodic renewal. Follow the Police procedure for long-term residence cards, rather than using a temporary work-permit checklist.
Start with your latest approval decision and the type of authorisation recorded on your card. Our Spanish residency checklist can help you organise that first review.
When should you submit your renewal?
The filing window depends on the procedure. Two calendar months and 60 calendar days can produce different dates.
| Renewal procedure | Normal filing window before expiry | Late filing window |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary employee, self-employed and non-lucrative residence renewals | Two calendar months | Up to three calendar months after expiry; a sanction may apply |
| UGE highly qualified professional renewal | 60 calendar days | Up to 90 calendar days after expiry; a sanction may apply |
These windows come from the current Immigration Regulation and the official highly qualified professional renewal procedure.
Other categories, including family cards and long-term card renewals, need their own deadline check. Use the procedure matching your authorisation, and aim to file before expiry.
The basic documents to prepare
Use this table to organise your file, then add the evidence required for your particular route.
| Document | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Valid passport or recognised travel document | A complete, legible copy where the procedure requires it; check passport validity requirements |
| Current residence information | Your latest approval decision and copies of both sides of your TIE |
| Correct application form | The current form for your authorisation, completed and signed by the appropriate applicant |
| Evidence supporting renewal | Documents showing that you meet the conditions applicable to your category and circumstances |
| Fee documentation | The correct payment form and receipt, according to the procedure’s payment instructions |
| Representation or family documents, where applicable | Authority to act, evidence of the family relationship, dependency or schooling, as required |
A new padrón certificate, foreign criminal record certificate or medical certificate is not automatically part of every renewal. Check the actual requirements before ordering documents from abroad.
Documents by type of residence permit
Employee residence and work permits
The official employee renewal guidance uses form EX-03.
The evidence depends on the basis for renewal. Continuing the original employment relationship, starting qualifying employment with another employer, and relying on certain unemployment benefits are different situations.
If you need to document a change of employment, obtain the relevant contract and evidence of the circumstances involved. Keep your Social Security employment history available to check dates and registrations against your application.
Losing a job does not automatically rule out renewal, but the applicable alternative must be established. Where dependent children are of compulsory school age, schooling evidence may also be required.
Non-lucrative residence
For a non-lucrative renewal, the official checklist uses form EX-01.
Prepare evidence of sufficient financial resources for the renewal period and the family members included, together with the required health coverage. Depending on how you support yourself, relevant evidence may include bank statements, pension documentation or other reliable proof of available resources.
Do not simply reuse the financial calculation from the initial application. The renewed authorisation is generally valid for two years, unless long-term residence is appropriate.
Ask your bank or pension provider for current documents, and obtain coverage evidence from your insurer or the relevant healthcare institution. Check residence and absence requirements as well as the paperwork.
Self-employed residence and work permits
The official self-employed renewal procedure uses form EX-07.
Where renewal relies on continuing your activity, review the business evidence and your compliance with tax and Social Security obligations. Keep relevant registrations, tax filings, invoices and payment records organised; their role depends on the basis of your application.
Obtain records from the relevant tax or Social Security authority and use your own business records to explain the activity. A collection of invoices should tell a coherent story alongside the official registrations.
Other renewal grounds may apply, including qualifying cessation-of-activity protection or support from an eligible family member. The supporting documents change accordingly.
UGE permits: highly qualified professionals and digital nomads
Authorisations under Law 14/2013 follow their own framework. Use the current international mobility application forms, including MI-T for principal applicants and MI-F for family members, as applicable.
Prepare evidence that the conditions relevant to your authorisation continue to be met. This may involve the current employment or professional relationship, remuneration, business activity, Social Security arrangements and health coverage.
For highly qualified professionals, the official renewal checklist includes the signed employment contract. Our 2026 highly qualified professional guide explains the national permit and EU Blue Card routes.
Digital nomads should check the renewal requirements for their specific status, particularly if their employer, clients or working arrangements have changed.
Family permits and study extensions
Family-based applications require the checklist for the particular family regime. A family reunification permit, an EU family card and a UGE family authorisation follow different rules.
Students should also identify the correct procedure: an extension of a study authorisation is an estancia procedure. For the categories covered by the official study-extension guidance, the evidence includes continuing studies, enrolment or admission and payment of the relevant fees, sufficient resources, health insurance and a qualifying passport.
Obtain academic documents directly from your institution. Do not substitute a generic residence-renewal checklist for the study procedure.
Do foreign documents need an apostille and translation?
Where a renewal requires a foreign public document, check both its authentication and its translation.
Depending on the issuing country and applicable exemptions, the document may need a Hague Apostille or diplomatic legalisation. A Spanish translation may also be required through an accepted official channel.
Follow the Ministry’s guidance on legalisation and translation. Our guide to sworn translations in Spain explains the practical preparation.
Check any document-specific validity period. There is no single expiry rule covering every certificate used in every renewal.
Where do you submit the application, and which fees apply?
Follow the filing channel stated in the official procedure. Many ordinary renewals are submitted through Mercurio to the competent Oficina de Extranjería; UGE applications use the UGE electronic procedure.
Before submitting, check the applicant’s details, passport number, authorisation category and attachments. Save the registered submission receipt and a copy of the complete application.
The fee also depends on the route. Ordinary renewals may involve Modelo 790 Código 052, with Código 062 also applicable to certain work-permit renewals. UGE procedures use Código 038.
The later TIE stage has a separate Código 012 payment. Select the correct fee item and follow its payment deadline; paying for the card does not pay the authorisation-renewal fee.
What happens while the renewal is pending?
For the ordinary renewals and UGE professional renewal described above, submission within the applicable filing windows extends the previous authorisation while the application is decided, subject to the relevant procedure.
Keep the receipt accessible and monitor formal notifications. If the authority requests additional evidence, read the request carefully, respond within its stated deadline and retain proof of submission.
An online status message does not replace the formal decision. If you intend to rely on administrative silence, first check the applicable decision period, any interruptions and the evidence needed to establish its effect.
Documents for the new TIE after approval
For the ordinary temporary renewals covered here, request the new TIE within one month of notification of approval.
Check the Police TIE procedure and the appointment instructions. Prepare the applicable application form, valid passport, approval evidence, current card, fee receipt and photograph.
The Interior Ministry’s card-renewal checklist specifies a recent colour passport-size photograph with a white background. If your address has changed, it also calls for an updated padrón document issued less than three months earlier.
Keep this appointment file separate from the documents submitted for the residence authorisation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the checklist from an initial visa application without checking the renewal requirements.
- Choosing a form or fee for a different residence category.
- Submitting documents that do not explain a change in employment, activity or family circumstances.
- Treating a Police appointment confirmation as proof that a renewal was filed.
- Missing a formal request for additional evidence.
Our guide to Spanish residency application mistakes explains further issues to check before submission.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need new foreign criminal record certificates?
Check your specific procedure and circumstances. A certificate required for an initial application is not automatically required again for every renewal.
Can I renew after my card expires?
Some procedures allow late filing, as shown above, but a sanction may apply. Identify the applicable deadline promptly and assess any case outside that window individually.
Can I travel while my renewal is pending?
A renewal receipt alone is not a travel document. If your card has expired, check whether you qualify for an autorización de regreso and whether your planned itinerary is compatible with it before travelling.
Can every temporary permit simply be renewed?
No. Depending on your authorisation and circumstances, the next step may be a renewal, extension, modification or application for long-term residence. Check this before preparing the documents.
