Residence card renewal in Spain can involve two different procedures: renewing your immigration authorisation and obtaining the physical card that documents it.
Before booking an appointment or collecting documents, identify which procedure applies to your situation. A temporary work permit, a non-lucrative residence authorisation and an existing long-term residence card do not follow the same renewal process.
This guide explains how to prepare, which deadlines to check and what to consider if you need to travel while your renewal is pending.
Residence Permit, TIE and NIE: What Is the Difference?
These terms refer to different things:
- Residence authorisation: the legal permission to reside in Spain under a particular immigration category.
- TIE — Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero: the physical card that identifies its holder and documents their immigration status.
- NIE — Número de Identidad de Extranjero: the identification number assigned to a foreign national.
For many temporary residence categories, you must renew the authorisation first. After approval, you apply for the corresponding TIE through the police procedure.
Booking a fingerprint appointment does not submit your residence permit renewal. The police card procedure and the authorisation application are separate steps.
Which Renewal Procedure Applies to You?
Check your latest approval decision alongside your current card. The decision identifies the authorisation that was granted and helps you select the correct procedure.
| Your situation | What to check before applying |
|---|---|
| Temporary residence and employment permit | The renewal requirements for your employment category, including your work and Social Security history. |
| Non-lucrative residence | Financial resources, health insurance and the other conditions specific to this authorisation. |
| Digital nomad or another authorisation under Law 14/2013 | The applicable UGE renewal procedure and continued compliance with the conditions of your permit. |
| Existing long-term or long-term EU residence | The procedure for renewing the physical TIE documenting your existing status. |
| Family member of an EU or Spanish citizen | Which legal framework applies and whether the next application concerns temporary residence, permanent residence or another procedure. |
| Study or exceptional-circumstances authorisation | Whether an extension, renewal or modification is appropriate for your particular authorisation. |
Employee renewals can have several qualifying grounds. Continuing with the original employer is one possibility, but changing jobs or becoming unemployed does not automatically rule out renewal. The applicable conditions and supporting evidence must be assessed.
Digital nomad and other relevant Law 14/2013 authorisations follow the UGE framework. Their renewal applications are electronic, and renewals are generally granted for two years where the required conditions remain satisfied.
Existing Long-Term Residence
Long-term residence permits authorise indefinite residence and work, subject to the applicable rules. The physical TIE still needs periodic renewal.
An expiring long-term card should therefore be distinguished from an expiring temporary residence authorisation.
For the documents, card validity periods and procedure specific to this situation, read our long-term residence card renewal guide.
EU Citizens and Their Family Members
An EU citizen’s registration certificate, commonly called a CUE, is a separate document with its own procedure. It should not be treated as an ordinary temporary TIE renewal.
Non-EU family members covered by EU free-movement rules may need to apply for a permanent family residence card when eligible. Family members of Spanish citizens should first confirm which framework governs their existing authorisation.
When Should You Apply for Renewal?
For standard non-lucrative and employee residence renewals under the general immigration framework, the application window is:
- During the two months before the authorisation expires.
- Within the three months after expiry, although filing during this later period may lead to sanction proceedings.
These are periods expressed in months. Avoid automatically converting them into fixed 60-day and 90-day deadlines or applying them to every immigration category.
Start preparing before the filing window opens. This gives you time to review your eligibility, obtain supporting documents and resolve inconsistencies.
What Happens If Your Card Expires While the Application Is Pending?
For the renewals described above, filing within the legally permitted period extends the previous authorisation until the procedure is resolved.
Keep the official submission receipt and a complete copy of the application. An appointment confirmation or payment receipt alone does not demonstrate that you filed the renewal application.
Other categories have their own rules. Check the procedure governing your authorisation before relying on an extension of validity.
Which Documents Should You Prepare?
Use the official checklist for your category. A practical starting point is:
- Your current passport and the required copies.
- Your current TIE.
- Your latest approval decision.
- The correct application form.
- Evidence supporting the renewal conditions.
- Proof of payment of the applicable application fee.
- Any additional documents relevant to your circumstances.
For example, non-lucrative renewal uses EX-01 and requires evidence of sufficient financial resources and health insurance. Employee renewal uses EX-03, with additional evidence depending on the qualifying employment situation.
Non-lucrative renewal also has a specific residence requirement: the current regulation requires actual residence in Spain for more than 183 days during the calendar year. Review your travel history when preparing this application.
Do not assume that every renewal requires a new foreign criminal record certificate, private health insurance or proof of language classes. Check which requirements and documents apply to your route.
Where foreign documents require sworn translation, apostille or legalisation, arrange this before submission. Applicable exemptions should also be checked.
How to Renew Your Residence Card in Spain: Step by Step
1. Identify Your Current Authorisation
Read the approval decision rather than relying only on the wording printed on your card.
Record the expiry date, authorisation category and relevant filing window. If your circumstances have changed, assess whether renewal remains the correct application or whether another procedure is needed.
2. Check Eligibility and Prepare the Evidence
Compare your circumstances with the current official requirements.
Review documents for consistency: passport details, names, dates, employment information and family relationships should agree across the application.
Organise your supporting evidence so that each renewal condition can be checked easily.
3. Submit Through the Correct Channel
Follow the submission instructions for your authorisation. Many general immigration applications can be filed through Mercurio, while relevant UGE applications use their own electronic procedure.
After filing, save:
- The registration receipt.
- The submitted form and attachments.
- Fee payment evidence.
- The application reference number.
Confirm that the application has actually been registered.
4. Monitor Notifications and Requests
Check the notification channel associated with your application and coordinate with your representative if someone filed on your behalf.
If the authority requests additional documents, read the notice carefully and respond within the stated deadline. Keep proof of the response.
There is no single processing period for every renewal. Some procedures also provide for positive administrative silence, but the applicable deadline and its calculation must be checked before relying on that outcome.
5. Apply for the New TIE When Required
Once the authorisation has been renewed, complete the separate police card procedure.
For the standard non-lucrative and employee renewals discussed here, the new TIE must be requested within one month of notification of the renewal.
The ordinary TIE procedure uses EX-17 and the 790 Código 012 fee. Check the appointment instructions for the complete document list, including passport copies, photographs and any address evidence required for your situation.
6. Collect and Check Your Card
Follow the collection instructions provided after the police appointment.
Check your name, NIE, authorisation category and expiry date on the new card. Retain the approval decision and renewal records even after collecting it.
How Much Does TIE Renewal Cost?
Distinguish the fee for processing the residence authorisation from the fee for issuing the physical card.
The police fee schedule checked on 8 October 2026 lists:
| Physical card procedure | Fee |
|---|---|
| TIE documenting a temporary residence renewal or extension of stay | €19.30 |
| TIE documenting long-term or long-term EU residence | €21.87 |
These are card fees. Your authorisation application may have separate fees, and other card categories have different amounts. Check the official police fee schedule before paying.
Can You Travel While Your Renewal Is Pending?
Check your travel documents before booking a trip outside Spain.
A renewal receipt should not be treated as a universal replacement for a valid residence card when travelling.
If your authorisation is being renewed or extended, you may qualify for an autorización de regreso after filing within the legal period. This document permits departure and return within its authorised validity, which cannot exceed 90 days.
It is valid for entry through authorised Spanish border crossings. Do not assume it covers entry through another Schengen country. Check your route, passport and any transit requirements before travelling.
Common Renewal Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking fingerprints before submitting the required authorisation renewal.
- Using a checklist for a different immigration category.
- Waiting until the final days of the filing period.
- Paying the card fee while overlooking a separate application fee.
- Missing an electronic notification or document request.
- Assuming a renewal receipt is sufficient for international travel.
- Following instructions written before the current rules took effect.
A useful preparation habit is to keep one folder containing your current decision, card, passport, renewal evidence and submission records.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Renew My Residence Card Online?
Many authorisation renewals can be submitted electronically. The subsequent physical TIE procedure generally requires personal attendance. Confirm the channel for each stage.
Does Losing My TIE Mean I Must Renew My Permit?
If the authorisation remains valid, a duplicate card may be the appropriate procedure. Check whether you need a replacement or whether your authorisation is also approaching expiry.
Is Every New Residence Card Valid for Ten Years?
No. Card validity depends on the residence category and applicable rules. Long-term cards also have different validity periods depending on the renewal stage and the holder’s age.
What Should I Do If My Renewal Is Refused?
Read the decision and its notification date immediately. Identify the reasons, available appeal procedure and deadline before deciding what to do next.
Do not assume that an appeal automatically has the same effect as a pending renewal application.
