From Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa to Long-Term Residence: The 5-Year Route

By Nodisea Legal Team··4 min read

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa can be the beginning of a route to long-term residence. In the ordinary case, a person may apply for Spanish national long-term residence after five years of legal and continuous residence in Spain, provided they meet the applicable requirements. The change is not automatic: it requires a separate application.

1. How does the five-year route work?

The timetable depends on how you obtained your Digital Nomad status:

  • If you applied through a Spanish consulate: the international telework visa can be valid for up to one year and authorises residence and remote work during its validity. If you wish to continue living in Spain, you can apply for a residence authorisation during the 60 calendar days before the visa expires, provided you still meet the requirements.
  • If you applied while legally in Spain: the initial international teleworker residence authorisation can be valid for up to three years. Its holders may apply for renewals of two years at a time while the conditions that justified the authorisation continue to be met.

An individual visa or authorisation may have a shorter validity. Keep your resolutions and check the dates that apply to your own case; time spent in Spain as a tourist is different from time spent as a legal resident.

2. Keep your residence and renewals in order

Before each renewal, check that your remote work arrangement and the other conditions supporting your authorisation remain in place. Changes to your employer, clients, professional relationship or Social Security arrangements may require a closer review.

For more detail, see our article on Digital Nomad Visa evidence and renewals in 2026. Keep copies of your visas, residence resolutions and renewals so that you can reconstruct your residence history when the time comes to apply for long-term residence.

3. How much time can you spend outside Spain?

For national long-term residence, absences of up to six consecutive months generally do not interrupt continuity if they total no more than ten months across the five-year period. Where absences are for work reasons, the aggregate limit can be 18 months, while the six-month limit for a continuous absence still applies. The rules also provide for certain justified exceptions that require an individual assessment.

Record your trips and review longer absences before assuming that five years of holding a permit will be enough.

4. What happens after five years?

If you meet the requirements, you can apply for national long-term residence. This authorisation allows its holder to live and work in Spain indefinitely; the physical residence card must still be renewed when due. The application is handled through the relevant Oficina de Extranjería, rather than as a Digital Nomad renewal before the UGE. The procedure uses form EX-11, a valid passport and the applicable fee, together with any other documents required for your circumstances.

Spain also has a separate EU long-term residence status with additional requirements. And long-term residence is different from Spanish citizenship, which has its own rules and application.
