An NIE in Spain is a foreign national’s identification number for dealings with Spanish authorities. You may need it for a property purchase, tax paperwork or another transaction, but the number itself does not give you permission to live or work in Spain.
Before booking an appointment, establish whether you need a separate NIE application or whether your number will be assigned through an immigration procedure. This guide explains the documents, application routes and official fee, and how an NIE differs from a TIE and an EU registration certificate.
What is an NIE number?
NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero. It is a personal, unique identifier assigned to a foreign national.
The format consists of X, Y or Z, followed by seven digits and a final control letter. Your NIE normally remains the same when you renew your passport or change your immigration status.
The number appears on different documents. Asking for an “NIE card” can therefore cause confusion: a document containing your NIE may serve a different purpose from the certificate confirming its assignment.
NIE, TIE and EU registration certificate: the differences
| Term | What it means | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| NIE | Your foreign national identification number | Identifies you in Spanish administrative procedures; does not grant residence or work rights |
| NIE assignment certificate | A document confirming your NIE | Provides evidence of the number; does not establish a right to reside |
| TIE | Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, a physical card | Documents the holder’s immigration status, including relevant residence or study authorisations, and contains the NIE |
| EU registration certificate | Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión, often called the green certificate | Records registration under the EU citizen regime and includes the NIE |
Keep your valid passport or applicable national identity document available. The NIE number does not replace your identity document.
The Ministry of the Interior explains the TIE and its purpose.
Do you need a separate NIE application?
A separate EX-15 application is one route to obtaining a number, but it is not the correct first step for everyone.
| Your situation | Procedure to consider |
|---|---|
| You live abroad and need a number for a genuine transaction or other connection with Spain | A standalone NIE application, including the consular route |
| You are legally in Spain and need an NIE for economic, professional or social reasons | A standalone EX-15 application through the competent office |
| You are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen moving to Spain for more than three months | EU citizen registration, normally using EX-18; the registration certificate includes an NIE |
| You are applying for a non-EU residence or study authorisation | Check the relevant procedure and whether an NIE has already been assigned |
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens staying for more than three months must apply for registration within three months of entry. They must meet the applicable conditions, such as employment, self-employment, or sufficient resources and health insurance. Students have specific requirements.
An EX-15 certificate alone does not fulfil that registration obligation. See the Ministry’s EU residence and registration guidance.
For non-EU applicants, the number may be assigned within the immigration process. Check existing decisions and documents before requesting another number. If your goal is relocation, assess the relevant permission, such as the digital nomad visa in Spain, before treating the NIE as your main application.
How to apply for an NIE in Spain
1. Check that the standalone route fits your circumstances
For an NIE requested on economic, professional or social grounds, you must explain why you need the number. If applying in Spain, you must not be in an irregular immigration situation.
This condition concerns the standalone application route. It should not be read as a claim that an NIE can never be assigned through another immigration procedure.
Buying property or submitting an NIE request does not extend your permitted stay.
2. Choose the correct office and appointment
Use the official immigration appointment service and check the procedures available in the relevant province.
Select the service for NIE assignment when that is your procedure. An appointment for TIE fingerprints or EU registration serves a different purpose. Read the selected office’s instructions before attending.
3. Prepare your documents
The Ministry’s NIE documentation guidance sets out the core requirements.
| Document | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| EX-15 | Complete and sign the current form; prepare the original and a copy |
| Identity document | Valid original passport and a copy of the complete passport, or another accepted identity or travel document |
| Reason for requesting the NIE | Explain the economic, professional or social connection and include supporting evidence relevant to your case |
| Fee payment | Proof of payment using Model 790, code 012, for the correct procedure |
| Representation, if applicable | Sufficient power of attorney expressly authorising the NIE application |
| Additional case documents | Follow the office’s instructions, including evidence relevant to lawful stay or legal representation |
Download the current EX-15 from the Ministry’s official forms directory. Select the NIE option if you are requesting assignment of a number; EX-15 also covers other certificates.
4. Submit and retain the paperwork
Attend personally or use an appropriately authorised representative. Keep the application receipt, payment evidence and a complete copy of the submitted documents.
Follow the office’s instructions for receiving the decision or certificate. Check that your name and passport details are correct.

Can you apply for an NIE from abroad?
Yes. If you are outside Spain, you can apply through the Spanish consular office responsible for your place of residence.
Check that consulate’s current requirements rather than copying another consulate’s checklist. Appointment arrangements, passport copies, signature instructions, payment methods and delivery arrangements can differ.
For example, the Spanish Consulate in London’s NIE instructions require proof of residence in its consular area and an EX-15 completed but unsigned before the appointment.
A representative must have the required authority. Applications for minors also require the relevant parent or guardian documentation.
The Spanish police assign the number; the consulate forwards the application. A consular NIE certificate does not grant residence in Spain.
How much does an NIE cost in 2026?
As checked on 4 October 2026, the official police fee schedule lists €9.84 for assignment of an NIE at the applicant’s request.
For this procedure in Spain, use Model 790, code 012 and select the NIE assignment option.
This national fee does not vary by province. EU registration, TIE issuance and other certificates have separate fee categories. Consulates publish their own payment instructions and local-currency amounts.
Professional assistance, translations or a power of attorney may involve additional costs. Recheck the official fee before paying.
How long does an NIE application take?
Article 205 of Royal Decree 1155/2024 establishes a maximum five-day period to decide and notify an NIE application, starting when it enters the competent processing authority’s register.
Under the general administrative time-limit rules, periods expressed in days are normally working days, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
This is not a promise that the entire process will take five days. Appointment availability, consular forwarding and any lawful procedural suspension or extension affect the overall timeline.
The NIE procedure has negative administrative silence: lack of a response within the applicable period does not mean approval. Check the file and obtain advice before deciding how to challenge a delay or refusal.
Common NIE application mistakes
- Requesting a new number when an NIE has already been assigned.
- Booking an appointment for a different procedure.
- Using the wrong EX-15 option or fee category.
- Giving a vague reason without relevant supporting documents.
- Assuming an NIE permits residence or employment.
- Following consular instructions intended for a different district.
Check these points before committing to a transaction deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Does my NIE expire?
The number itself is a permanent identifier. The validity of your immigration permission or the document containing it is a separate matter. An organisation may also request recent documentary evidence.
Can I work in Spain once I have an NIE?
An NIE alone does not authorise employment. Your right to work depends on the immigration regime or authorisation applicable to you.
Can I complete the whole NIE application online?
Downloading EX-15, preparing a fee form and booking an appointment online do not make the whole procedure an online application. Follow the submission instructions for the competent office or consulate.
Do I need an NIE to open a bank account?
Check the particular bank and account type. Identification, tax information and proof of residence or non-residence may be required. The Bank of Spain explains account-opening documentation.
What if I lose my NIE certificate?
Request evidence or replacement documentation for your existing number. Losing a certificate does not mean you should apply for a second NIE. A lost TIE has its own replacement procedure.
