Job Search Visa Spain: Requirements for Graduates

Graduate consulting an immigration lawyer about Spain’s post-study job search residence permit.

Last updated: 5 October 2026

The route often called the Job Search Visa Spain is a post-study residence authorisation for eligible graduates who completed higher education in Spain. It gives them up to 24 months to look for suitable employment or prepare a business project.

This authorisation does not itself allow you to work. Finding a job or preparing a business is different from having permission to begin paid activity.

Before applying, check your qualification, your student authorisation’s expiry date and whether a direct move to a work permit would better fit your circumstances.

Which job search route does this guide cover?

Spanish immigration law provides for different routes with similar names:

RouteWho it concernsDuration
Post-study job search residence authorisationEligible graduates of authorised higher education institutions in SpainUp to 24 months, non-renewable
Consular job search visasSpecified categories, including children or grandchildren of Spaniards of origin and selected occupations or geographical areas, subject to the applicable selection rules12 months

This guide covers the post-study residence authorisation. The consular route has separate conditions and selection arrangements; it is not a general visa available to anyone who wants to move to Spain and look for work.

The graduate authorisation also has its own legal basis. Its financial requirements should not be confused with those of Spain’s ordinary non-lucrative residence visa.

Who can apply after studying in Spain?

The route requires previous student status and completed studies at an authorised higher education institution in Spain, reaching at least European Qualifications Framework level 6.

Level 6 corresponds to bachelor’s degree level. Higher qualifications may also qualify, but the recognised level and nature of the award must be checked. The word “master” in a course’s marketing material is not enough to establish eligibility.

A Spanish language course or a qualification below the required level does not qualify for this particular route. A degree obtained abroad does not, by itself, establish eligibility for Spain’s post-study authorisation.

If the final diploma has not yet been issued, an appropriate completion certificate or other accepted official evidence may establish that the studies are finished. Ask the institution to confirm completion and the qualification awarded.

Financial requirements in 2026

The standard requirement is 100% of IPREM per month for the applicant, plus 75% for the first accompanying family member and 50% for each additional family member.

Using the 2026 monthly IPREM of €600:

HouseholdStandard monthly amountCalculation for 24 months
Applicant alone€600€14,400
Applicant and one eligible family member€1,050€25,200
Applicant and two eligible family members€1,350€32,400

These calculations assume a full 24-month period and an unchanged IPREM. They are financial resources for living expenses, separate from application fees.

For the applicant, official guidance allows a reduction to 50% of IPREM where accommodation has been properly prepaid for the whole residence period. A rental deposit or one month’s rent should not be treated as proof of that condition. Any family calculation involving prepaid accommodation needs its own assessment.

The law provides for a responsible declaration detailing the available resources. The resources must actually exist. Keep supporting records available and ensure that the declaration explains how you will fund the full period.

Health insurance and other eligibility conditions

You need public or qualifying private health insurance. Where insurance is contracted with an insurer, it must be authorised to operate in Spain. Coverage should meet the applicable healthcare requirements and be maintained throughout the authorisation.

Check the policy’s benefits and exclusions rather than relying on a product label. Basic travel insurance should not be assumed to provide the required cover.

The application must also satisfy the relevant passport, criminal record, public order and public health conditions. Review any additional documentation required for your previous student authorisation and personal circumstances.

Documents to prepare

The Ministry’s current information sheet identifies EX-26 as the application form.

Prepare:

  • A completed and signed EX-26.
  • A valid passport or recognised travel document, with at least one year’s validity.
  • Evidence that the qualifying studies have been completed.
  • The responsible declaration detailing sufficient resources.
  • Health insurance documentation.
  • Evidence of your previous student authorisation and its expiry date.
  • The relevant fee payment.
  • Family documents where accompanying relatives are included.

The official checklist expressly includes criminal record documentation where the previous study authorisation lasted less than six months. Check whether your file requires additional certificates rather than assuming every applicant must obtain the same documents.

Foreign public documents may require an apostille or diplomatic legalisation unless exempt, together with the appropriate sworn translation. Confirm these formalities before arranging translations.

When and where should you apply?

The filing window is:

  • 60 calendar days before the student authorisation expires.
  • 90 calendar days after its expiry, with a possible sanctioning procedure for late filing.

Plan to submit before expiry. The later window is a legal filing option, rather than a reason to postpone preparation.

Applications are submitted electronically through the relevant Mercurio procedure to the Delegation or Subdelegation of the Government in the province where you will reside. The applicant or an authorised representative may file.

Submission within the statutory window extends the previous authorisation’s validity until the procedure is resolved. Keep the filing receipt and monitor electronic notifications.

Processing time and positive administrative silence

The statutory decision period is 20 working days, calculated under the applicable administrative procedure rules. Saturdays, Sundays and relevant public holidays are excluded.

Positive administrative silence can apply if the legal period expires without an express decision. Requests for missing documents and other lawful suspensions can affect the calculation.

Before relying on silence, check the competent authority’s receipt date, notifications and any suspension. A certificate confirming administrative silence can help document the outcome.

This legal period does not mean that the physical residence card will be ready within 20 days.

Can you work with the job search permit?

The approved job search authorisation does not authorise employment or self-employment. Accompanying relatives under this route do not receive a right to work either.

Do not assume that work rights attached to your previous student status continue after the post-study authorisation takes effect.

Once you have a suitable offer or a viable business project, identify the appropriate work or business residence route and confirm the conditions for starting activity.

What happens when you find a job?

A job offer does not automatically convert the job search permit into a work permit. The appropriate authorisation must be requested, with employment suitable for the level of studies completed.

The requirements depend on the route. An ordinary employed-work modification can involve the national employment situation assessment where the applicant has held residence for less than one year, unless an exemption applies. Time spent under a student stay should not be counted as residence for this particular test. Permission to seek a modification is not an unconditional right to approval.

Other routes have different tests. A qualifying professional role may warrant an assessment under the highly qualified professional framework; see our highly qualified worker guide.

If you already have a qualifying job offer when your studies finish, compare a direct study-to-work modification before choosing the job search route. The job search authorisation is not a compulsory intermediate step.

Our work permit services can help assess the offer, employer and applicable application procedure.

Can family members remain with you?

The route can cover the same relatives who already accompanied you during your studies in Spain as holders of the relevant family authorisations.

Their continued stay is linked to the principal applicant’s status. Include them in the financial calculation and assess their documents and application position.

This provision should not be treated as a general invitation for relatives who did not previously accompany the student.

What should you do after approval?

Check the start and expiry dates in the decision and request your TIE within one month of notification, through the competent Police office.

Follow the Police checklist for the application form, passport, decision, photograph, fee and any address documentation required in your case. Fingerprinting and card collection are separate practical stages, and appointment availability varies.

Our TIE application service explains the assistance available with those formalities.

Can the authorisation be renewed?

The post-study job search authorisation is non-renewable, with a maximum duration of 24 months.

Use that period to prepare a qualifying employment or business application. If your plans change, assess another lawful route before expiry; eligibility for a different permit must be established separately.

Do not assume that being enrolled on a new course automatically extends this residence authorisation.
