Choosing a Spanish immigration form starts with identifying the procedure you actually need. An application for studies, non-lucrative residence, employment or a residence card can involve different forms, even when the applicant’s circumstances seem similar. This guide explains commonly used EX forms and links to the versions published by Spain’s Ministry of Inclusion. It is a starting point: the applicable procedure and supporting documents depend on your individual case.
Which Spanish immigration form do you need?
Long stays, residence and work
- EX-00 — Application for a long-stay authorisation, including eligible study and training situations. Check the specific study route and whether you are applying in Spain or through a consulate.
- EX-01 — Application for temporary non-lucrative residence.
- EX-02 — Application for temporary residence through family reunification under the relevant general immigration rules.
- EX-03 — Application for temporary residence and employed work, or an employed-work authorisation.
- EX-07 — Application for temporary residence and self-employed work.
- EX-10 — Application for residence on exceptional grounds, including relevant arraigo routes.
- EX-11 — Application for long-term residence or EU long-term residence.
Identification documents and EU family routes
- EX-15 — Application for an NIE number or certain certificates. An NIE number is not, by itself, permission to live in Spain.
- EX-17 — Application for a foreigner identity card (TIE). The card documents a status or authorisation; this form does not replace the underlying residence application.
- EX-18 — Registration of residence for an EU citizen.
- EX-19 — Residence card for an eligible family member of an EU citizen under the applicable EU family rules.
- EX-24 — Temporary residence authorisation for eligible family members of Spanish nationals under the corresponding procedure.
The EX-18, EX-19 and EX-24 address different situations. In particular, do not assume that an EU citizen’s registration form is also the form for their non-EU family member, or that every family member of a Spanish national should use EX-19.
EX-00 and EX-01 forms: guidance in English
Looking for the EX-00 or EX-01 form in English? The official versions linked above are in Spanish. The explanations below help you understand their sections; they are not replacement application forms. Download the official form and read its instructions before completing it.
EX-00 form: understanding the main sections
The EX-00 includes sections for your personal details, the institution and study or training programme, your representative and notification details. Additional sections apply to specific situations, such as accompanying a student or requesting permission to work.
Use your institution’s documents to check its name, identification details, programme dates and study format. In “Tipo de autorización de estancia solicitada”, select the option that matches your procedure: the form covers several situations, so not every box applies to every applicant.
EX-01 form: understanding the main sections
The EX-01 is used for temporary non-lucrative residence. It asks for the applicant’s details and, where applicable, information about the family member providing the financial resources.
“Datos del representante” concerns the person submitting the application on your behalf. “Domicilio a efectos de notificaciones” identifies the recipient and address for official notifications.
Under “Tipo de autorización solicitada”, distinguish between an initial application and a renewal, and between the holder of the financial resources and their family member. Follow the form’s date format: day/month/year.
What if you are applying for a Digital Nomad Visa?
International telework has its own procedure under Law 14/2013. A residence authorisation submitted to the UGE should follow the UGE’s official guidance for international teleworkers, rather than selecting an EX form from the general list above. A consular visa application follows the requirements of the consulate handling it. Our Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide explains the two application routes.
Before completing a form
- Identify the legal route first. The right form depends on the applicant’s nationality, current immigration status, family or employment circumstances and the type of permission sought.
- Check where and how the application must be filed. Depending on the procedure, this may involve a consulate, an Immigration Office or an electronic platform.
- Download the current official version. Use the Ministry’s catalogue of immigration forms and check the information sheet for your specific procedure.
- Review the complete application. The form is only one part of it. Supporting evidence, signatures, applicable fees and filing deadlines also matter.
If you are unsure which route fits your circumstances, Nodisea can review your documents and help you prepare the appropriate application.
