If your Spanish visa or residence authorisation requires a TIE, you apply for the physical card through the National Police. The process generally involves preparing your documents, paying the applicable fee, attending a fingerprint appointment and collecting the card once it is ready.

The correct procedure depends on your immigration status and whether you need a first card, a renewal or a replacement.

This guide explains the main steps, deadlines, documents and practical points to check before your appointment.

What is a TIE card?

The TIE, or Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, is the physical card documenting a foreign national’s authorised immigration status in Spain.

Your NIE — Número de Identidad de Extranjero — is your personal foreigner identification number. It appears on the TIE, but having a NIE does not necessarily mean that you hold a residence authorisation or a TIE.

Keep your passport valid as well: the TIE does not replace your passport as a travel document.

Treat your immigration approval, fingerprint appointment and card collection as separate steps, each with its own documents and timing.

Who needs a TIE card in Spain?

Under Article 209 of Spain’s Immigration Regulations, foreign nationals granted a visa or authorisation to remain in Spain for more than six months generally have to obtain a TIE, subject to the rules governing their particular category.

This can include residence permits and qualifying long-duration study authorisations.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally follow the EU citizen registration certificate procedure when residing in Spain for more than three months. Non-EU family members and other special categories must follow the instructions for their particular residence document.

An important distinction for Digital Nomad Visa holders

A consular Digital Nomad Visa and a Digital Nomad residence authorisation issued in Spain are different documents.

Under Articles 75 and 76 of Law 14/2013, the relevant consular visa authorises residence during its validity without requiring a TIE.

Once a residence authorisation lasting more than six months is granted under that law, the TIE must be requested.

Check which document you actually hold before booking the card appointment.

What is the deadline for applying?

The general deadline is one month from the relevant event:

  • Entry into Spain.
  • Grant of the authorisation.
  • The date the authorisation takes effect, including any applicable Social Security registration condition.

The starting point depends on your immigration route. Read your visa, approval decision and procedure instructions together.

Do not automatically calculate the deadline from the day you happen to download the decision or find an appointment.

How to apply for your TIE: step by step

1. Check your approval and the correct procedure

Confirm your NIE, authorisation type, validity dates and any conditions that must be completed before card issuance.

If your authorisation depends on Social Security registration, check that requirement before attending.

For renewals, the National Police’s card guidance explains that the new card is requested after the favourable renewal decision has been notified.

2. Book the fingerprint appointment

Use the official immigration appointment portal.

Select the province where you live and the police procedure for card issuance and fingerprinting, commonly identified by “TOMA DE HUELLAS.”

Read the instructions displayed for that office and save the appointment confirmation.

A fingerprint appointment and a card-collection appointment are separate procedures. Select the one you need.

3. Prepare your documents and pay the fee

Complete the correct application form, arrange the photograph and gather the documents applicable to your case.

Pay the card fee using the appropriate category on Modelo 790, Código 012. Keep proof of payment.

Preparing the payment form alone does not show that the fee has been paid.

4. Attend the appointment personally

The current official EX-17 form expressly requires personal submission before the competent National Police unit. It cannot be submitted through an electronic register or ordinary public registry.

At the appointment, the police check the documents and complete the applicable biometric steps.

Keep the receipt issued after your application. Children must follow the relevant attendance and legal-representation requirements.

5. Collect and check your card

Follow the office’s instructions about when the card is ready and whether a separate collection appointment is required.

Attend the collection office indicated with your valid passport, application receipt and any other documents requested.

Check your name, NIE, card category and validity dates. If something is incorrect, raise it with the police office.

Documents for the TIE appointment

Use the Ministry of the Interior’s TIE checklist together with your appointment instructions.

DocumentWhat to prepare
EX-17 application formComplete and sign the current form. Its instructions require an original and a copy.
Valid passport or travel documentBring the original and the copies requested for your procedure.
Visa or approval decisionBring the document applicable to your case, including the relevant approval decision for authorisations under Law 14/2013.
Entry evidence, where applicableCheck the accepted evidence of entry, including any required declaration of entry.
PhotographPrepare a recent passport-sized colour photograph with a white background.
Paid fee receiptBring proof of payment for the correct Modelo 790, Código 012 category.
Social Security evidence, where applicablePrepare the evidence required for your authorisation and appointment.
Appointment confirmationKeep the confirmation showing the office, date and procedure.
Previous card, where applicableBring it for a renewal or replacement when it remains in your possession.

Additional documents depend on whether you are applying for a first card, renewal, duplicate or change of details.

How much does a TIE cost?

The official National Police fee schedule lists different amounts depending on the card category.

At the date of this review, examples include:

Card categoryPublished fee
First card documenting temporary residence, stay or cross-border worker authorisation€16.08
Card documenting renewal of temporary residence or extension of the relevant stay authorisation€19.30
Card documenting long-term or long-term EU residence€21.87

Family cards and other special categories can have different fees.

Use the official Modelo 790, Código 012 payment form and select the category matching your actual procedure. Check the amount again when preparing payment.

The card fee is separate from any fee paid for the underlying immigration application.

Is empadronamiento required for a TIE?

A municipal registration certificate is not listed as a universal document for every first TIE application in the Ministry’s general checklist.

However, your procedure or local appointment instructions may require address evidence.

For renewals and duplicates where your address has changed, the Ministry expressly requests an updated volante or certificado de empadronamiento issued less than three months earlier.

Read our guide to empadronamiento in Spain for help understanding municipal registration and the documents it produces.

First card, renewal or replacement: what changes?

SituationMain point to check
First TIEConfirm that your visa or authorisation requires the card and that any conditions for issuance have been met.
Renewal after a temporary authorisation is renewedComplete the underlying immigration renewal procedure and then request the card documenting the approved period.
Lost, stolen or damaged cardRequest a replacement promptly. Prepare the loss or theft report, or the damaged card, as applicable.
Changed personal details or immigration situationFollow the procedure and provide the documents supporting the change.

A replacement card generally keeps the remaining validity of the card it replaces. It does not create a new residence period.

Long-term residents should also distinguish renewal of the physical card from the underlying residence right.

Can you travel while waiting for the TIE?

A fingerprint receipt is not a travel document. Before leaving Spain, check whether your passport, visa and other documents will allow you to return.

An autorización de regreso may be available in qualifying renewal or replacement situations.

For a first residence or stay authorisation already approved, it can be issued where the journey responds to a situation of necessity and exceptional circumstances apply. It is not automatically available simply because the card is being produced.

The National Police also states that an autorización de regreso is valid for re-entry through authorised Spanish border crossing points. Check your route carefully if travelling through another Schengen country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for the TIE entirely online?

No. The standard EX-17 card application requires personal submission before the competent police unit. An online residence application is a separate procedure.

Will renewing my TIE give me a new NIE?

Your NIE is your personal identification number. Renewing or replacing the physical card does not normally change that number.

What if there are no fingerprint appointments available?

Continue checking the official system, keep dated evidence of your attempts and contact the responsible police unit for instructions. Seek guidance before your deadline rather than assuming that appointment shortages extend it.

How long does it take to receive the card after fingerprints?

Follow the estimate and collection instructions provided by your police office. Timing varies, and the appointment confirmation does not guarantee a particular collection date.

Can I work before collecting my TIE?

This depends on the underlying authorisation, its effective date and any conditions, including Social Security registration where applicable. Some authorisations do not permit work. Card production alone does not determine your employment rights.

Can someone help me prepare the application?

Yes. A professional can help check your documents, identify the correct procedure and assist with administrative preparation. The personal-attendance requirements for card issuance still apply.
