The Ukraine TIE extension in Spain can mean that your residence card remains valid even after the expiry date printed on it. For people who already hold temporary protection, understanding the applicable extension can prevent unnecessary renewal appointments and help explain their documentation to employers or other organisations.

However, the validity of the existing Spanish card and the duration of temporary protection are governed by separate measures. This guide explains the distinction and the practical checks to make before using your documents or travelling.

1. Ukraine TIE extension in Spain: the two dates to understand

Two dates currently matter:

What is extended?Relevant dateLegal basis
Existing Spanish TIE cards issued to beneficiaries of temporary protection affected by the conflict in Ukraine4 March 2027Spanish Order INT/96/2026
Temporary protection covered by the latest EU extension4 March 2028Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1912

The EU has already adopted the additional year of protection, which applies from 5 March 2027.

For practical documentation purposes, distinguish that protection period from the specific Spanish measure extending existing cards. When presenting your TIE, use the applicable Spanish card-extension rule and follow any subsequent official instructions about documentation for the additional year.

2. Do you need to renew your existing TIE?

Under Order INT/96/2026, published on 17 February 2026, the validity of existing TIE cards issued to the relevant temporary protection beneficiaries in Spain is automatically extended until 4 March 2027.

The order expressly removes the need to obtain a new card solely to comply with the documentation obligation covered by that extension.

An earlier printed expiry date therefore does not, by itself, mean that a covered card has stopped being valid.

Keep your existing card. If you have renounced temporary protection, this extension does not remove the obligation to return it.

3. Who does this guide apply to?

This guide principally concerns people who have already been granted temporary protection in Spain and hold a TIE documenting that status.

Check that your card relates to temporary protection. A Ukrainian passport alone does not establish that you hold this status, and a card issued under a different immigration route should be checked under the rules for that route.

If you have never obtained your first TIE

The extension of cards already issued does not replace the initial documentation process.

If you have a favourable temporary protection decision but have never obtained your TIE, follow the official Police procedure for obtaining your first card. The Ministry’s temporary protection guidance explains the distinction between recognition of protection and obtaining the identity card.

If you are applying for temporary protection now

New applications require a separate eligibility assessment.

Article 2 of Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1912 introduces a requirement concerning compliance with military obligations in Ukraine, with proof where applicable. Under the corrected text, this provision applies from 5 August 2026.

It does not apply to people who already held temporary protection in the same Member State on or before 4 August 2026 and have continuously retained that status there afterwards.

The corrected EU decision should be checked when assessing a new application.

4. Can you continue working in Spain?

Temporary protection in Spain includes authorisation to reside and work. Beneficiaries can work as employees or become self-employed, subject to the normal requirements for their activity.

The Ministry of Inclusion’s guidance explains that the residence and work authorisation applies throughout the duration of protection.

If an employer queries the date printed on your card, a useful document pack is:

  • Your existing TIE.
  • Your temporary protection decision.
  • The applicable official card-extension order.

Ask the employer to review these together. If the problem concerns an administrative record rather than the physical card, identify the specific record that needs checking.

Temporary protection also provides access to healthcare and education for children. Reception support and financial assistance have their own eligibility conditions; holding protection does not guarantee every benefit.

5. Can you travel with an automatically extended TIE?

The extension is relevant beyond everyday procedures in Spain. The EU’s published list of recognised Spanish residence permits records the extension under Order INT/96/2026 without requiring a replacement card.

Nevertheless, a TIE is a residence document. It does not replace a passport or other valid travel document.

Short visits to other Schengen countries

People holding the relevant residence permit can generally make short visits to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, provided they meet the applicable travel conditions.

That short-visit permission does not give an unrestricted right to settle or work in another country.

Before travelling outside Spain

As a practical preparation checklist:

  1. Check your passport or travel document.
  2. Carry your original TIE and keep a copy of your protection decision.
  3. Save the official Spanish extension order.
  4. Check the entry requirements of your destination and any transit country.
  5. Confirm documentation requirements with the airline before departure.

A copy of the order can help explain an older printed expiry date, but it does not replace the original documents or guarantee boarding.

If you do not have your card, or it has been lost or stolen, consult the competent Police or Immigration Office before travelling. The official guidance recommends checking whether a return authorisation or another procedure is needed for your circumstances.

6. What should you do if an organisation rejects your card?

If a bank, employer or another organisation treats your TIE as expired because of the printed date, start by clarifying the exact reason.

A practical approach is to:

  1. Explain that your card documents temporary protection.
  2. Provide the official rule supporting its extended validity.
  3. Ask which additional document or verification they need.
  4. Request a written explanation if the problem remains unresolved.

Keep copies of the correspondence. This makes it easier to distinguish a misunderstanding about the expiry date from a separate identity, registration or eligibility issue.

Avoid handing over your only original decision or card. Provide copies where appropriate and retain the originals.

7. Does the extension give you permanent residence?

The extension continues temporary protection. It does not automatically convert your status into permanent residence or another immigration authorisation.

The EU has also adopted a framework for a coordinated transition out of temporary protection, including consideration of other residence statuses for people who qualify.

If you want to plan your future in Spain, assess possible employment, family, study or other residence options against their actual requirements. Holding a job or receiving an extension does not, by itself, establish eligibility for a particular alternative permit.

An individual review can help you understand your options before making changes to your current status.

Frequently asked questions

My TIE shows an expiry date in 2024, 2025 or 2026. Is it necessarily invalid?

No. Check whether it is a temporary protection card covered by the applicable extension and whether you continue to hold that status. The printed date alone is not enough to determine its current validity.

Do I need a fingerprint appointment just because of the extension?

A replacement card is not required solely for the automatic extension described above. First issuance, lost cards or other documentation problems should be dealt with separately.

Is 2027 or 2028 the correct date?

Both appear in the current framework for different reasons: 2027 concerns the Spanish extension of existing cards, while 2028 concerns the latest EU protection period. Use the rule relevant to the document or status you are checking.

Can I continue working?

Temporary protection includes residence and work authorisation while the status remains in force. Employment and self-employment remain subject to the normal requirements for the activity.

Can I use my TIE instead of my passport when travelling?

No. A TIE does not replace a valid passport or other accepted travel document. Check the documents required for your route before departure.

What if I have lost my TIE?

Contact the competent Police office for instructions about replacement. If you intend to travel, check your return documentation before leaving Spain.
