If you have lived in Spain for at least two years and want to study while regularizing your immigration status, arraigo socioformativo may be an option. This residence authorization replaced the route commonly called arraigo para la formación for new applications under the immigration regulations that took effect on 20 May 2025. The name is only the starting point: your residence history, immigration and asylum status, and the exact course all matter.
The key work rule is often misstated. Once arraigo socioformativo is granted, it permits employed work (trabajo por cuenta ajena) for a combined maximum of 30 hours a week, subject to the applicable minimum pay in proportion to the hours worked. Filing this application does not itself grant the provisional work authorization that the regulations reserve for a different category of arraigo. This route also does not, by itself, authorize self-employment.
1. Who may qualify?
Arraigo socioformativo is a temporary residence authorization for eligible non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals already in Spain. The ordinary requirements include all of the following:
- Two years in Spain. You must have been continuously present in Spain for at least the two years before applying. Absences during those two years must not exceed 90 days in total; gather dated evidence across the whole period.
- Asylum history. You cannot be an applicant for international protection when you file or while the arraigo application is pending. Time spent awaiting a final decision on an asylum application does not count toward the ordinary two-year period. A past asylum history needs an individual timeline review.
- Current immigration status. You must not hold a stay or residence authorization or be a party to a pending application for the grant, extension, renewal or modification of one. This requirement was added to the general arraigo rules in April 2026.
- General eligibility. You must meet the criminal-record, public-order and other general requirements, and pay the applicable fee.
- Social integration report. An integration report issued by the competent autonomous community or, where applicable, municipality is required.
If you have a current or past residence permit, a pending immigration application, or an asylum case, the right route may depend on the dates and documents in your file. Do not withdraw an application solely on the basis of a general article.
2. Which courses are eligible?
There is no general rule that any course of 200 hours qualifies. The current regulation identifies specific types of training. Before paying for a course, obtain written details of the programme, the authorized centre, the credential and the official enrolment dates.
| Possible training route | What to verify |
| Post-compulsory secondary education | A full-time programme at an authorized centre leading to a recognized qualification. |
| Professional training certificate | A complete Grade C professional certificate programme at an authorized centre, including levels 1, 2 or 3 where applicable. |
| Adult compulsory education | In-person compulsory education for adults within the specified official offer. |
| Public employment service training | A qualifying commitment to training promoted by the public employment services for an occupation in the relevant shortage-occupation catalogue; verify the specific offer. |
Admission to a course alone is not enough if the course falls outside the permitted categories. The training requirement and the integration report are separate elements of the application.
3. Documents to prepare
- Application and fee. Complete, sign and submit official form EX-10 and obtain the fee document (form 790, code 052, section 2.3.1).
- Identity. Supply a complete copy of a valid passport or another accepted travel/identity document.
- Residence history. Build a dated record of your continuous presence in Spain, preferably including official documents such as municipal registration, public healthcare or other administrative records.
- Background checks. Obtain the foreign criminal-record certificates required for the countries of residence in the relevant five-year period, together with any required sworn translations and apostilles or legalization.
- Integration. Obtain the integration report from the competent authority for your habitual residence.
- Training. Provide proof of enrolment, admission or current attendance for an eligible programme, or the qualifying public-employment-service commitment when that is the route used.
The evidence that best establishes two years of presence may differ from the documents used to prove the course. A lawyer can check gaps, absences and formalities before you file.
4. How the application works
- 1. Check the route. Check the eligibility category, continuous residence calculation, official course timetable and the authority that issues your integration report.
- 2. File on time. File the application in person at the Foreigners’ Office (Oficina de Extranjería) in the province where you live, with EX-10 and the supporting documents. If your course has an official enrolment period, the regulation requires the arraigo application to be filed during the two months before that period opens.
- 3. Track the decision. The stated legal decision period is three months from the day after the application reaches the competent register. If no decision is notified in that period, the request may be considered refused through negative administrative silence. This is not a promise that every case will finish within three months.
- 4. Complete the post-grant steps. Where enrolment remains to be evidenced after approval, submit proof within three months of notification; failure to do so can lead to the authorization being withdrawn. Apply for the physical foreigner identity card (TIE) within one month of the grant notification.
5. Can you work while studying?
Yes, after the arraigo socioformativo authorization is granted, it permits employed work for no more than 30 hours a week in total. Pay must meet at least the minimum wage or applicable collective-agreement wage, in proportion to the hours worked. The specific permission under this category is for employment, not a general self-employment permission. The separate provisional permission during processing in article 130(5) applies to arraigo sociolaboral, not to an ordinary socioformativo application.
6. How long does it last, and what happens next?
The initial socioformativo residence authorization lasts one year. An extension is possible only where its conditions are met. For basic or intermediate vocational programmes, the training centre’s report must certify progression to the second year. If the course was completed before the year ended, the regulation requires the resulting qualification or certificate and active job-seeking with registration at the public employment service. Apply for an extension in the two months before expiry where possible. A different residence or work authorization may be appropriate later, depending on your circumstances; there is no automatic conversion into an unrestricted work permit.
7. What if you applied under the former arraigo para la formación rules?
The former name still matters for older files. Authorizations already valid when the new regulation came into force keep their validity for the period granted. Applications submitted before the change are generally processed under the rules in force when filed, unless the applicant requests the new regulation and meets its requirements. Check the filing date and the terms of your own decision before relying on current work-right or extension rules.
8. Frequently asked questions
Is two years of municipal registration enough?
The requirement is continuous presence, assessed using evidence across the relevant two years; municipal registration can help, but one certificate may not resolve gaps or absences. The asylum-time rule may also affect the calculation.
Can I choose any vocational course?
No. Check that the exact programme and centre fit a category in article 127(d) of the regulation. A generic promise that a course lasts 200 hours does not establish eligibility.
Can I start a job as soon as I apply?
An ordinary socioformativo application does not itself grant the provisional work permission that applies to sociolaboral applications. The socioformativo employment permission comes with the grant and is limited to a combined 30 hours per week.
Can I renew for another year automatically?
No. The extension depends on the relevant study-progress or course-completion evidence and, where required, active job-seeker registration. Review the options before the authorization expires.
